Trail To Jay Mountain

The trail to Jay Mountain is an 8.7 mile moderately challenging out and back trail. Indeed, the trail passes through a mixed forest and culminates with an open ridge line that provides amazing scenic views of the surrounding area.

Getting There

Parking at the trail head is somewhat limited. I recommend that you start your hike early.

The Jay Mountain trail is located in the Jay Mountain Wilderness Area near beautiful Lake Placid.

The Trail

The first part of the trail consists continuously sloped terrain progressing through mixed forest.

Furthermore, a few of the inclines are relatively steep, with occasional rocks and roots.

Subsequently, after some 2.5 miles of hiking, we reached the Scenic Overlook.

The Viewpoints

Although quite beautiful, the views were completely obstructed by the fog, which had intensified.

Since we couldn’t see the view, we decided to come back the following day to finish the trail.

From the Scenic overlook, we then headed towards the ridge line.

Moreover, as you walk out of the vegetation and onto the beginning of the ridge line, Jay Mountain reveals itself.

Further, the rocky ridge line provides spectacular panoramic views of the Adirondacks.

In fact, Jay Mountain stands at an elevation of 3600 feet.

Moreover, total elevation gain is approximately 2100 feet
