From La Pompe to Mount Peggy
Our journey hiking Bequia begins in La Pompe, a quiet village on Bequia’s southern coast. Notably here, the roadway hugs the shoreline, offering sweeping views.
Notably, to the east, Battowia. Just beyond lies Baliceaux, an unhabited island.
Closer to Bequia, we see Semple Cay. Furthermore, for generations, whalers have brought their catch here to be processed.
And then, Mustique, a private island famous for its villas, celebrity visitors, and royal connections.
Lastly, Petit Mustique
Hiking Mount Peggy
A little bit further, we turn inland and begin our climb towards Mount Peggy. The trail starts gently, past a few homes and gardens.
Once at the top of the hill, turn left.
The trail begins, left of the goats.
Once you come across this abandoned house, you know you are on the right track.
As we ascend, the views begin to expand. Looking back, we can see Petit Mustique, Mustique, Baliceaux, Battowia and the southern coastline.
Here, some parts of the path aren’t very obvious so keep an eye out for markers to guide your way.
In fact, after the first viewpoint, the incline steepens somewhat but should be manageable for most fitness levels.
Consequently, keep an eye out for local fauna. A beautiful tropical racer snake raced by me on the trail, mere inches from my feet. Don’t worry, none of the snakes on Bequia are venomous.
From the second viewpoint, we have a better view of La Pompe and Friendship Bay.
Once we arrived at this section of the trail with scattered rocks and steeper, slightly more technical incline, we felt we were getting close.
Summit View
At the summit of Mount Peggy, we stand at Bequia’s highest point. Consequently, the panorama is breathtaking: Lower Bay, Princess Margaret Beach and Port Elizabeth harbor to the North.
J.F. Mitchell airport, Isle À Quatre and Petit Nevis to the south.
From this vantage point, we can see our point of departure, near Princess Margaret Beach. The hike from Princess Margaret Beach to the summit and back is about 12 kilometers, with an elevation gain of roughly 300 meters. It is a moderate climb, suitable for most walkers, though the tropical sun makes it feel more demanding. Make sure to bring lots of water!
In any event, when you will make your way back on the same path, you will get another perspective of the breathtaking views.
From village roads to mountain trails, this journey captures the essence of Bequia — its landscapes and timeless charm.
