Our latest adventure brings us back to see Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano, one of the country’s most iconic natural wonders.
We came to Arenal Volcano National Park, a few years ago, and were met with some serious downpours. But now we’re back to see it in a whole new light. Let’s find out how this visit compares to our rainy adventure!
The Adventure Begins
As you begin your hike on Sendero Colada, towering grasses line the path. Venturing deeper on the trail, the vegetation gradually transitions into dense jungle.
Arenal Volcano
Towering at 1,633 meters, the volcano is the centerpiece of the park. This majestic stratovolcano was one of the most active in the world until it entered a resting phase in 2010. Furthermore, its symmetrical shape and stunning presence create a dramatic backdrop for our adventure.
One of the highlights of hiking in Arenal Volcano National Park is exploring the old lava fields. In addition, these rugged terrains are a testament to the volcano’s powerful eruptions in the past. Likewise, walking on the solidified lava rocks, you can almost feel the history beneath your feet.
Observation Points
Throughout the hike, you’ll come across a few observation points that offer breathtaking views of the volcano and Lake Arenal. Consequently, these spots are perfect for capturing stunning photos and taking a moment to appreciate the awe-inspiring beauty of the landscape.
Fauna and Flora
As we venture on into the rainforest, we are surrounded by towering trees, vibrant foliage, and the sounds of tropical birds. Keep an eye out for wildlife. After all, the park is home to over 850 species, including howler monkeys, sloths, and the elusive jaguar.
Moreover, as we continue our hike, we encounter the diverse flora and fauna that make this park a biodiversity hotspot. From colorful orchids and bromeliads to curious lizards and vibrant butterflies, every step reveals something new and exciting.
Towering Ceiba
Consequently, as you follow the trail deeper into the jungle, you arrive at the foot of a towering Ceiba tree, rising an impressive 30 meters into the canopy. Its ancient trunk, weathered by four centuries, stands like a sentinel, its branches spreading majestically above the dense, lush surroundings. Hiking Arenal Volcano National Park is more than just a trek through nature; it’s an immersive experience that connects you with the raw beauty and power of the natural world. If fortune smiles upon you, you might just encounter the elusive and stunning coral snake.
Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano is a must-see if you travel to this beautiful country.
