Exploring Mount Pisgah

Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Willoughby in Vermont, Mount Pisgah stands at an elevation of 2,751 feet.

The road

Making your way from the North part of the lake to the South Trail head is quite scenic. The road twists and turns following the shores of lake Willoughby and provides incredible views along the way.

We recommend that you start your hike early since the parking area can fill up relatively quickly.

Always carry out your trash and food waste, and make sure you leave no trace!

The Trail

The South Trail is 3.8 miles, or 6.1 kilometers out and back. Elevation gain is 504 meters. The trail is rated as “hard” on All Trails. In our opinion, the trail can be challenging for some but should be considered as “Moderate”.

A few of the inclines are relatively steep, with occasional rocks and roots.

Don’t forget to sign in and out.

The trail is generally in good condition and well maintained.

The Viewpoints

As the first viewpoint reveals itself midway up the trail, you will be in awe as you first gaze at the azure colors of the lake.

A few hundred feet after reaching the summit, you will find the outlooks.

Indeed, from the South lookout, you can see Burke Mountain and Mount Washington.

Additionally, the rocky outcrops of the West lookout provide spectacular panoramic views of lake Willoughby and the surrounding area. Furthermore, the long and narrow valley, with its steep cliffs, looks quite similar to a fjord.

In addition, from the North overlook, you can see Camel’s Hump, Mount Mansfield and Whiteface Mountain, among others.

Cell Service

Cell service at the base and on the trail is spotty. Mount Pisgah is quite close to the Canadian border. Once you are near the summit, mobile phones have a tendency to connect to Canadian mobile providers.
