The dramatic coastal cliffs, formed by ancient volcanic activity, provide a stunning backdrop and create a captivating and otherworldly atmosphere. No wonder some scenes from Star Wars The Acolyte were filmed at Ponta de São Lourenço.

The impressive cliffs, expansive ocean views, and rugged terrain provided the perfect backdrop for the series, adding to the trail’s  appeal. As you hike, you may find yourself recognizing certain vistas that appeared in the show, adding an extra layer of excitement and connection to the cinematic world.

With its stunning landscapes and dramatic viewpoints, the trail is sure to leave a lasting impression. It encapsulates the rugged beauty and unique charm of Madeira.

Spanning approximately 7.6 kilometers (4.7 miles) round trip with an elevation gain of around 430 meters (1,410 feet), this trail promises an unforgettable adventure.

This hike typically takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and the number of stops you make to take in the views.

First Viewpoint

The first viewpoint offers a sweeping panorama of the coastline. Here, you can observe the interplay of land and sea in all it’s splendor. The cliffs plunge dramatically into the ocean, and the waves crashing against the rocky shores create a mesmerizing spectacle. The sight is both powerful and humbling, showcasing the raw beauty of nature in its most unrefined form.

As you continue along the path, the trail begins to wind through a series of gentle slopes and steeper ascents, providing a diverse hiking experience.

Second Viewpoint

Further along the trail, you’ll encounter the second viewpoint. The sight is both powerful and humbling, showcasing the raw beauty of nature in its most unrefined form. The contrast between the rugged cliffs and the vast expanse of the ocean creates a breathtaking scene that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Traversing the Ridge

As you make your way further along the peninsula, the trail offers continuous views of the ocean. Moreover, this section is relatively flat, allowing you to enjoy the dramatic landscape. The flora here is unique, with plants that have adapted to the dry and windy conditions, creating a stark yet captivating environment. The combination of the vibrant blue sea, the reddish-brown cliffs, and the green vegetation creates a stunning visual tapestry.

Third Viewpoint

After climbing relatively steep steps leading to a ridge line with impressive vertical cliffs a stunning view reveals itself.

Fourth Viewpoint

As you reach the fourth viewpoint, you’ll be taken aback by the incredible panoramic view.

Consequently, you will be amazed as you contemplate the fresh perspective of the path you’ve just traveled.

Casa do Sardinha

The trail then guides you towards Casa do Sardinha, a small house that serves as a resting point for hikers where you will find restrooms, a snack bar, picnic areas, and shaded spots to relax. It’s a great place to refuel and rehydrate before continuing your adventure.

From this juncture, the trail begins a steep ascent, guiding you toward its most captivating highlight.

Only a few more steps left to see an unparalleled 360-degree view of the area.

From this vantage point, the eastern coastline of Madeira and the dragon’s tail stretches out before you, offering a sweeping vista of cliffs and sea stacks. In fact, on clear days, you can spot the nearby Desertas Islands and the distant silhouette of Porto Santo. The dramatic cliffs, the crashing waves, and the endless horizon create a truly awe-inspiring scene. It’s easy to see why the rugged beauty of this landscape was chosen as a filming location for Star Wars: The Acolyte.

The Return Journey

The return journey offers a chance to appreciate the views from a different angle. Furthermore, the ever-changing play of light and shadow creates a dynamic and constantly evolving panorama.

Ponta do Rosto

Once you have made your way back to the parking area, make sure to stop by the Ponta do Rosto viewpoint. To get there, keep right at the first circle. Then, stay on the narrow road for approximately one and one half kilometer.

From this vantage point, you can marvel at the stunning northeast coast of Madeira, take in a reverse-angle view of one of the trail’s scenic lookouts, and observe a section of the hiking trail itself.
