As you head south on the coastal road, witness the bustling streets filled with shops, restaurants, and the colorful waterfront.
The drive offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, with its mesmerizing shades of turquoise and blue.
Things to See
Playa Uvas is a charming beach club located on the western coast. Known for its clear waters, pristine sandy beaches, and vibrant marine life, Playa Uvas offers a blend of relaxation and adventure.
A popular destination for cruise ship passengers is Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park. A lush oasis offering botanical gardens, a lagoon, and snorkeling amidst coral reefs.
Continuing south, the road winds through verdant landscapes dotted with occasional beaches, resorts and beach clubs. The air is filled with the scent of salt and tropical blooms.
Making your way further south, Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club is one of the most popular beach destinations in Cozumel. In fact, it is known for its all-inclusive packages, extensive amenities, and a wide range of activities. Mr. Sancho’s offers a vibrant and entertaining beach experience for visitors of all ages.
Alberto’s Beach Bar is a well-loved beachside destination located on the southwestern coast of Cozumel. Alberto’s is known for its relaxed vibe, live bands, excellent seafood, and stunning sunsets. Alberto’s offers a quintessential beach bar experience that attracts both locals and tourists. Whether you’re spending the day swimming, snorkeling or simply relaxing with a cocktail, Alberto’s provides a welcoming and enjoyable beachside retreat.
Our Favorite Spot
Playa Palancar is a beautiful and serene beach located on the southwestern coast of Cozumel. Additionally, there is an on-site restaurant and bar offering a selection of local and international dishes, as well as refreshing drinks and cocktails.
Playa Palancar features a beach club with amenities such as lounge chairs, umbrellas, and palapas for rent.
Playa Palancar has soft white sand, crystal-clear waters, and is near to Palancar Reef, one of Cozumel’s top diving and snorkeling spots. The reef is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, one of the largest barrier reefs in the world.
Playa Palancar was our favorite place to enjoy a cold beverage while taking in the stunning ocean views.
On the island’s southern tip, next to Punta Sur eco-park’s entrance, is Freedom in Paradise Reggae Beach Bar. An excellent spot to enjoy a day at the beach with good food, refreshing drinks, and a chill reggae ambiance, making it a memorable part of any trip to Cozumel.
Turtle Nesting Areas
When visiting, it’s important to be mindful of the natural surroundings, especially if the beach area is also a turtle nesting site. Cozumel’s beaches are important nesting sites for several species of sea turtles, including the loggerhead and green sea turtles. If you spot a turtle nesting area, make sure to respect the site. Help ensure that these magnificent creatures continue to thrive.
Turning north along the eastern shore, the landscape transforms into wild, rugged beauty. In fact, this side of the island is less developed, with pristine, secluded beaches. The waves here are more powerful, creating a dramatic contrast to the calm waters on the west side. The road here is quieter, lined with dense vegetation and the occasional rustic beach bar. Consequently, make sure to stop for a refreshing drink and enjoy the view.
El Mirador Archway
If you stop here, make sure to check out El Mirador, a natural rock formation sculpted by the sea into an archway. Furthermore, climbing up provides an excellent vantage point for photos and a chance to admire the beautiful colors of the ocean.
Playa Bonita’s natural beauty and more rugged, less developed landscape will captivate you. The abandoned buildings provide quite the picturesque setting. They were probably damaged by hurricanes, which are common in the region. Consequently, over time, the forces of nature have continued to impact these structures.
Playa Chen Rio, tucked away on the eastern coast of Cozumel, is a hidden gem awaiting discovery. Soft, powdery sand stretches along the shoreline. Therefore, kick off your shoes and feel the warmth beneath your feet. The waters here are a mesmerizing blend of turquoise and deep blue, with gentle waves lapping against the shore.
The Drive
Eventually, the road exploring Cozumel Mexico brings you back to San Miguel de Cozumel. All in all, the drive, roughly 40 miles around the island, offers a rich tapestry of natural wonders, cultural sites, and the laid-back charm that makes Cozumel a cherished destination. Moreover, it’s a journey that encapsulates the essence of the island, from bustling human activity to the serene embrace of nature.
