Our latest adventure trek took us deep in the dense jungles of Costa Rica where we slept a night in the rainforest, in a cave behind a waterfall.
The Hike
Our day started off with a long hike up a path through the mountains in the Los Tumbas region of Perez Zeledon. The views were absolutely breathtaking along the way. Sweating profusely, we eventually reached a point where a huge piece of bamboo sticks out of the bush inviting you for a drink of refreshing spring water. Continuing along the way, we reached a finely manicured garden and stopped for a well deserved break. Our guide, Abraham, taught us about some of the vegetation surrounding us as he harvested some fresh produce which we would eat later on in our trek.
We then continued along until the jungle noises were slowly overtaken by the sounds of the approaching waterfall. Suddenly as we walked out of the bush, the majestic falls revealed themselves as we stood in awe. In the meantime, the skies began to rain heavily as we walked the path in between the beautiful waterfalls up to the cave. We set up camp and had heart of palm fajitas for lunch.
Night In The Rainforest
Soon after the heavy rainfalls subsided, just as day turned to night, the jungle’s timid inhabitants began coming out of hiding. Scorpions, tarantulas, snakes, on the prowl, looking for some dinner – hopefully other than us. We took to exploring the area in the darkness of the night, armed with only our flashlights and my camera. After relaxing by the fire, we headed for bed.
The Next Morning
We woke up with the rising sun. We had breakfast and then walked down to the top of the lowest section of the falls. Taking in the view of the Pacific ocean from the edge of the cliff atop of the 600′ waterfalls was nothing short of spectacular. Indeed, we could not believe how fortunate we were to have this incredible place entirely to ourselves.
The Experience
Lastly, after a quick swim, it was time to get back on our way to our next adventures. Altogether, what an experience it was to have slept a night in the rainforest, in the cave behind the waterfalls.
