La Fortuna Waterfall, also known as Catarata Fortuna, is located near beautiful Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica.
The La Fortuna Waterfall is nestled in a biological reserve part of Arenal National Park.
The Trail
To get up close to the 230 foot (70 meter) waterfall, one must hike down the 530 or so step trail leading you into the dense rainforest.
Along the well maintained path, you may just be lucky enough to spot some monkeys and/or other Costa Rican wildlife.
The loud sounds of the “singing” crickets will most surely entertain you along the way.
The Waterfalls
Once at the base of the La Fortuna Waterfall, you can see the beauty of the falls from different vantage points. Just make sure to watch your step on those slippery rocks.
Furthermore, should you feel up to it, why not take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the Fortuna river?
The Climb
Don’t forget to keep some energy for the climb back up those 530 steps.
Along the way up on the path are some benches and seats where you can stop and take a break, should you need one.
Once your climb is over, you should definitely explore the incredible Orchid Garden. The entrance is located on the pathway on the right at the top of the stairs.
There is a small restaurant near the top of the stairs where you can enjoy, among other things, a delicious Costa Rican coffee.
Recommendation
Depending on the season, the La Fortuna Waterfalls can get quite crowded. The ideal time to plan your visit would be early in the morning so as to beat the crowds.
On this occasion, we were there during the beginning of wet season. As the day progressed, we were surprised at the number of people on the site.
